Formula One and Road Safety

Car Driving

The Formula One 2024 season is well and truly underway, with Max Verstappen in pole position ahead of the Australian Grand Prix. During a time when racing is prominent, we think now is a fitting time to reflect on road safety and accident prevention.

Driving at speed can feel exciting yet it is one of the leading causes of road traffic accidents. Excessive speed reduces breaking distances and makes coming to a stop harder to predict and manage. Higher speeds can also increase the severity of damage in the event of a crash. An individual should always take note of the speed limit and consider whether their speed is appropriate for the road conditions.

Reckless driving can also be a leading cause of accidents. This can include performing dangerous manoeuvres or changing lanes without looking. Maintaining an appropriate distance between other road users and pedestrians around you can be crucial in keeping safe on the roads. Maintaining a two second gap between the car in front of you is recommended as a minimum.

Loss of control over a vehicle can occur due to a multitude of reasons and it is not always the driver’s fault. Road conditions and vehicle malfunctions such as flat tires, potholes and debris can cause loss of control. Other examples can include taking a corner too quickly or driving too quickly in poor weather conditions.

If you find yourself having experienced a road traffic accident, whether as a driver, passenger or pedestrian, you may be able to pursue a claim for compensation. Road traffic accidents can lead to devastating effects on all aspects of your life. An individual can claim compensation for a variety of losses including current and future loss of earnings, rehabilitation, specialist equipment, pain and suffering and compensation for damage to your vehicle and personal items.
