Bristol NHS Trusts: £66 million payout for children’s medical negligence since 2019

Over the past 5 years, NHS Trusts in Bristol have paid out over £66 million in compensation in children’s medical negligence claims, an investigation has found. Bristol Live reports that the most common injuries include fatalities, brain damage, bowel damage, and cerebral palsy.
Bristol Live reported that data obtained by Medical Negligence Assist shows that two NHS Trusts have reported 80 claims and incidents of children’s medical negligence to NHS Resolution in the past 5 years.
41 of these claims have been settled, with damages exceeding £66 million. University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Trust accounted for the greatest share, at a cost of over £47 million.
Many of the cases stem from failures, and delay in treatment and diagnosis. Other injuries were reported and include hypoxia.
