Two-thirds of parents feel a lack of support during separation proceedings

Argument

Findings reveal that two-thirds of parents admit to the lack of support or advice about how to put their children first whilst splitting up with their partners during separation proceedings.

One-third of separated or divorced parents admitted that they found it more difficult to keep child contact arrangements in place when the pandemic restrictions such as lockdown were in force. Nearly three in ten parents agreed that they felt increased stress and tension in their relationship with their ex-partner since the pandemic began.

Recent statistics reveal that during the last 12 months in England and Wales, almost 90,000 children were made subject of private family law applications, to determine matters such as where and whom the child is to live. The findings reveal that this is the highest figure ever recorded and it represents an increase of over 6 per cent on the previous year.

The above findings show clear evidence to support the reports that the global pandemic was a large factor contributing towards relationship breakdowns. As the pandemic continues into 2022, the stress placed on families and relationships continues to increase.

A quarter of parents admit that their children showed a loss of confidence, whilst a similar proportion admitted that their children had suffered with depression due to a irretrievable breakdown of the parents relationships.

Two-fifths of parents declared that they turned to their families and friends for advice during the relationship breakdown, whilst only a third of parents engaged a solicitor or legal professional. The majority of parents admitted that doing so was an effective method in obtaining advise they needed.

During separation, parents may be doing their best to protect their child from the impact of separation. Children will often pickup on many of these emotions and experiences and may need to talk about the situation. Often, children can feel as though they are caught up in the middle of both parents.

Whilst legal help and advice will always support the welfare and needs of a minor child, it is important to reduce stress within the household to impose the least detrimental benefit as possible.
