This year’s Family Mediation Week is 22-26 January 2024

Family Mediation Week

As members of Resolution our Private Family Team at Jordans Solicitors proudly support Family Mediation Week. The purpose of this week is to raise awareness of the benefits of mediation and how it can support separating families and encourage them to make decisions together and build a positive future for their families.

Family Mediation Week is organised by the Family Mediation Council, whose aim is to promote the use of family mediation as an alternative to litigation to resolve family disputes. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of what Mediation is and how it can help your family.

What is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is a process in which an independent, impartial and professionally trained mediator assists the parties to come to an agreement where there is a dispute; whether that be in relation to arrangements for the children upon the breakdown of a relationship or financial matters upon divorce. Mediation can be a very useful tool, as it promotes clear communication between the parties and presents a practical solution in a confidential space. It is also possible if you choose to retain legal representation throughout the process for any legal assistance you may need. More information can be found here Mandatory Mediation funding for separating couples.

Is Mediation free?

There is a fee to pay when attending mediation, however we encourage you enquire with your local Mediation facilitator to see if you may be eligible for the family mediation scheme voucher, which can provide funding of up to £500 towards the costs of family mediation. For more information please visit National Family Mediation, information on the voucher scheme.

If you would like more information on mediation, and to search local facilitators near you visit the Family Mediation Council website. https://www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk/fmw/.
