How long does it take to get divorced?

Once the application for divorce has been issued, there is a waiting period of 20 weeks before it is possible to move on to the next stage, which is the Conditional Order.
Six weeks and one day after the Conditional Order has been granted, it is possible to apply for the Final Order to conclude the proceedings. Once the Final Order has been made, your marriage will be legally dissolved and you will be free to remarry.
You should therefore bear in mind that is going to take at least 6 - 8 months for the proceedings to be finalised, taking into account how quickly the Court are able to deal with each stage of the application. If, however, there are issues such as needing to locate the current whereabout of your spouse, or your spouse fails to respond to the Court once the application has been issued, then this could delay the time it takes to conclude the divorce.
