Train Operator Working To Change Damaging Culture Towards Females

A top train operator is working on a 3 year campaign with White Ribbon, the UK’s leading charity seeking to end violence against women and girls.

Tricia Williams, managing director of Northern, who employ 7,000 staff and have millions of customers, is spearheading the operation and said: 

"White Ribbon is doing amazing work to highlight the sad reality of unwanted sexual behaviour, harassment and abuse faced by women and girls across the country every day of the year.

"We’re proud to be working with them to change that reality – and our White Ribbon Accreditation is a sign of our commitment to bringing about positive change in the communities we serve and ensuring we have inclusive workplaces where everyone feels that they belong."

White Ribbon collaborates with over 400 organisations to shift harmful cultures, attitudes and behaviours, aiming for a society where women and girls are free from violence and harassment.

The campaign highlights;

• 70% of UK women report experiencing sexual harassment in public spaces (APPG for UN Women, 2021)
• Three in five women have faced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse at work (Trade Unions Congress, 2023)
• 15% of women in England have been victims of online violence (Professor Olga Jurasz, The Open University, 2024).

In mixed-sex schools;

• Nearly a quarter (24%) of girls reported unwanted sexual touching (EVAW, 2023), 
• 1.4 million women suffered domestic abuse in the year ending March 2023 (ONS). 

Northern operates as the UK's second-largest train service provider, running 2,500 daily services to over 500 stations in the North of England.
