Domestic abuse: Shedding a light on male survivors and pursuing a CICA claim

While it is true that women make up a significant portion of survivors who suffer domestic abuse, there is also a silent crisis of domestic abuse against male survivors. Despite the rising concern, male survivors usually face stigma, fear of not being believed and a lack of support due to this when seeking help.
This blog explores the reality of domestic abuse against men, the barriers and how they may be entitled to compensation though the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
Domestic abuse can take many forms including physical violence, emotional manipulation, financial control and coercive behaviour. Though male survivors do experience this from their partners, societal norms and gender stereotypes often leave them feeling isolated and unable to report their experiences.
The major factor of why men feel unable to speak up about the abuse they have suffered is due to stigma and stereotypes. Many men feel embarrassed or ashamed to admit they are survivors of abuse. This is largely due to the society expectations of men having to maintain their masculinity and not being allowed to show a ‘weaker side.’ Despite this challenge, male survivors of domestic abuse have rights and should seek justice. Once potential avenue for compensation is through the CICA scheme.
The CICA scheme is a government funded scheme. It is designed to provide financial compensation to a victim of a crime of violence. To be eligible for the scheme, the abuse must be a crime of violence such as a physical or sexual assault and a complaint must have been made to the police within 2 years of the date of the assault. It may be necessary to obtain medical evidence on the physical and psychological injuries which have been suffered. An applicant would always be advised to seek advice from a Solicitor to ensure they achieve the best possible outcome.
Domestic abuse against men is a serious issue that deserves more awareness and support. While societal expectations are slowly changing, many male survivors still struggle to be recognised and supported. Seeking justice through a CICA claim can provide financial compensation and validate the experiences of male survivors.
