Shelim Ahmed, aged 36, from Rochdale, has been charged with four counts of rape by Lancashire police following investigations into allegations of historic sexual abuse. He is due to appear at Blackburn Magistrates Court on 24th January 2024.

The Rochdale grooming gang came to be known between 2008 to 2010. This involved men who would target young girls aged between 13 and 15 whom would be trafficked, prostituted, raped and assaulted.  This story even came on to influence the BBC show ‘three girls’ which reflected the horrors these girls went through.

A total of 56 men were interviewed by the police however not all of them were tried leaving plenty of them still free.  The trial came to an end in May 2012 resulting in nine convictions. The ringleader of this gang was given the highest sentence of 19 years, for rape, aiding and abetting a rape, sexual assault, trafficking for sexual exploitation and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children.

Earlier this year five men from an alternate grooming gang in Rochdale had been sentenced for abusing two teenage girls, this abuse involved plying the girls with alcohol, cannabis and ecstasy pills before sexually assaulting them. This occurred between 2002 and 2006. The highest sentence given to one of the men was 20 years imprisonment for six counts of sexual assault and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

A further amount of 21 men from Rochdale await sentencing relating to abuse dating back to the 2000s.
