The continued rise of transgender hate crimes in England and Wales

Transgender

The 2018 National LGBT Survey carried out by the Government Equalities Office, confirmed transgender people were more likely to experience hate crimes when compared with the whole of the LGBT community.

Out of the 108,100 responses to the National LGBT Survey, it was reported 88% of transgender people did not report the most serious types of incidents, yet the recorded number of hate crimes against transgender people continues to rise.

According to ONS data, hate crimes involving sexual orientation have increased in the past 5 years by 112%, with an increase of 11% of crimes against transgender people.

The ONS data indicated that hate crimes involving transgender people or hate crimes based on sexual orientation are most likely to involve violence or threats of violence.

Figures published by Statista Research Department in October 2024, confirmed an increase in hate crimes against transgender people rose to 4,732 in 2022/2023, which is an alarming jump from the 313 similar offences reported in 2011/2012.

Despite many countries becoming more liberal over the past few decades in their attitudes towards sexual relationships and ‘non-traditional’ family forms, the 2023 British Social Attitudes Survey revealed 64% of the British public felt they were “not prejudiced” towards transgender people, which is down from 82% in 2021, with many commentators blaming political and media rhetoric for driving up the hate crimes against transgender people.
