Mohamed al Fayed, former owner of Harrods has been accused of sexually assaulting over 20 ex-employees whilst they worked for him, when he owned the London store between 1985 and 2010.

Survivors of the abuse have come forward to disclose the culture of abuse at Harrods during this time and how “pretty young girls” were targeted by him. His private office has been described as a “model agency” full of young women and former employees have recounted how he used to walk around the store and identify young female employees who he found attractive. He would then promote them to work in his private office.

Ex staff have told the BBC how this abuse was an open secret in the store, one said, “we all watched each other walk through that door thinking you poor girl, it you today and feeling totally powerless to stop it.”

One survivor has described that she suffered unnecessary and intrusive medical examinations and from more than the 20 women who have come forward, 5 women have disclosed that they were raped by Fayed.

Evidence has been given that he would also abuse former employees at his home in Mayfair and on trips to Paris, St Tropez and Abu Dhabi.

Fayed died in 2023 aged 94, however, claims can still be brought against Harrods. The new owners of Harrods have said that “ it is their priority to settle claims in the quickest way possible, avoiding lengthy legal proceedings.”

Workplaces should be safe places, however, sadly, sexual abuse by someone in a position of power is not uncommon in this setting. Mohammed al Fayed has been described as using his power to systemically abuse female former employees.

The women who have come forward and disclosed the abuse they have suffered have shown bravery and courage in speaking about their experiences. It is hoped that it will enable others who have also suffered sexual abuse to come forward.
