Medomsley: Ex-officer on sexual and physical abuse charges

CICA thumbnail 3

The trial of a former prison officer at Medomsley Detention Centre in Co Durham accused of a string of sexual and violent offences against young inmates dating back to the 1960s and 70s has begun at Teesside Crown Court.

Last month, medical reports ruled that Alexander Flavell, 89, was unfit to face charges, including misconduct in a public office, two of assault, one of indecent assault and another of buggery.

Judge Howard Crowson told the jury that they will have to decide, in his absence, whether the defendant committed the acts alleged based on the facts they hear.
