Jordans solicitors are happy to support Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and Andy’s Man Club
Every November is home to Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and it is a good time to raise general awareness about men’s mental health challenges.
Some of the many shocking statistics quoted during this month are: -
- 12.5% of men in England suffer from a mental health disorder
- Men are 3 times more likely to die by suicide in England than females
- Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50.
It is however well reported that there are multiple reasons men feel discouraged from discussing their mental health or reaching out for help.
In addition to the traditional NHS routes to support and treatment, there are charities, services and other organisations providing help and support.
One of these is Andy’s Man Club which has received a lot of focus in the media over the last few years with lots of celebrities publicly supporting it. It was founded in Halifax in 2016 to create a positive change in men’s mental health. It offers free peer to peer support groups for males over the age of 18.
The club meets in a variety of locations all over England, Scotland and Wales including hotels, community centres, sports facilities and even fire stations. Football and rugby clubs are increasingly acting as venues. The club is well represented in Yorkshire with clubs meeting close to all our offices in Leeds, Wakefield, Penistone and Selby.
It is reported that the charity supports over 4,000 men every week with the aim of providing a confidential space where men can be open about their issues and support each other to deal with their mental health.
As an abuse lawyer, many of my clients suffer from a range of symptoms including anxiety and depression. Physical and sexual abuse in childhood are recognised as important risk factors for the subsequent development of depression.
Many men are reluctant to seek treatment for example through the NHS and sometimes, if they do, find the process a struggle. A peer support group such as Andy’s Man Club in less formal surrounding than for example a clinic can be a good starting point for help and support with mental health.
Jordans solicitors are acting on behalf of vulnerable children and young adults whom it is alleged were sexually abused in a number of different types of institutions.
Compensation is a small step towards taking control of your life and getting the justice you deserve.
We understand how difficult it can be for you to talk about the abuse you suffered during your childhood. That’s why our specially trained child abuse solicitors work closely alongside psychologists and barristers to support you both emotionally and legally.
Justice for child abuse survivors should be accessible no matter how long ago it happened. That’s why we fought for a landmark change in the law, which allows an abuse claim to be brought before a court regardless of when it took place.
