Former choirmaster jailed for 3 years for historic sexual abuse on a child

Sean McNally, aged 71, a former organ teacher and choir master at St Peter’s Church in Hersham has been jailed for 3 years for historic sexual abuse on a child between 1973 and 1976. He was sentenced on the 30th of September at Kingston Crown Court.

McNally would prey on the child’s faith and would make the child swear to God not to tell anyone about the abuse. McNally has now pleaded guilty to two counts of indecency with a child and three counts of indecent assault on a male person.

McNally used his position of authority at the church and groomed the child and made him feel special by taking him on trips and being educated on ‘secret societies.’ The survivor has now had years of therapy as an adult to heal from the abuse that he suffered as a child.

The diocese of Guildford has expressed their concerns and have spoken in a statement that they are committed to making the church a safer place and have taken the necessary safeguarding steps. They have said ‘but we can never be complacent. Abuse is a terrible crime and a grievous breach of trust, which has lifelong effects.’

Investigating officer Emily Nurcombe reassured the public and said ‘we will always investigate allegations of non-recent sexual abuse, no matter how long ago the abuse occurred. You will be listened to; you will be believed, and you will be supported. We hope this case gives confidence to others who have suffered non – recent sexual abuse that – no matter who the offender is and how many years have passed – if they speak out, they will be listened to.’
